The Matrix

What do you believe is wrong with the world?  How do you think it can be fixed?  My unsuspecting fifteen-
year-old nephew, Thomas, and I recently spent the weekend together, considering these fundamental
questions.  We didn’t set out with such lofty aspirations.  (In fact, our agenda was centered on food, food
and more food.  Those of you who have been, or spent time with, a teenage boy can readily identify, I’m
sure.)  But I was sensitive to, and deliberately took advantage of, opportunities to discuss issues and
questions of lasting importance.  Even then, I only stumbled into the best learning opportunity, which arose
from Thomas’ most recent project in art class.

What Are They Teaching In Middle School Art Class?

It was late Saturday evening, and I was reading the newspaper, winding down after a long day of
entertaining Thomas.  While he was in the same room, I was happy that he wanted to surf his school’s
web site, rather than talk.  I was spent, physically and emotionally.  I needed some alone time.

The silence didn’t last long.  Soon, Thomas was asking me the month of my birth.  “April,” I answered, not
really listening to the question.  He replied by reading something aloud.  Despite his interest and
excitement, I still was not paying attention.  Not a word registered in my brain.  Thomas then asked what
day I was born.  “The tenth,” I replied.  He again read something aloud.  This time I heard a phrase or two;
he was reading something that sounded like a horoscope.  He finally had my full attention.  “What are you
reading anyway?”  I asked.
